RAM ProMaster

The widest interior of any full-size van. Budget-friendly, easy to build in.

Why This Platform

The ProMaster is the most affordable full-size van platform GTRV builds on, and it has one spec that sets it apart from the Transit and Sprinter: interior width. The ProMaster's cargo area is wider and flatter than either competitor, which gives you more layout flexibility and makes the build-out process simpler.

That width comes from the front-wheel-drive architecture. Because there's no driveshaft running under the cargo floor, the floor sits lower and the walls go straighter up. The result is a more usable box shape inside. For a conversion, that means fewer compromises on bed width, easier cabinet installation, and more floor space to work with.

Front-wheel drive also helps with traction in wet conditions and keeps the step-in height low, which matters if you're getting in and out of the van frequently. But it means there's no AWD option. If off-pavement capability is important to you, the Transit (with available AWD) or the Sienna (AWD standard) may be better fits.

The other tradeoff is how it drives. The ProMaster is a taller, boxier vehicle than the Transit, and you feel that difference on the highway, especially in crosswinds. It's not uncomfortable, but it's worth test-driving before you commit. The Transit and Sprinter feel more car-like at highway speeds.

Pop-top conversions are available on the ProMaster, which gives you a garageable option on a full-size platform at a lower price point than a pop-top Transit. For people who want the interior space of a full-size van on a tighter budget, the ProMaster is worth serious consideration.

What We Build on It

We work on both the ProMaster 1500 and 2500. They share the same body; the difference is in payload capacity and suspension. For a pop-top or Weekender build, the 1500 is sufficient. For a heavier full Westy conversion, the 2500's stronger suspension is the better starting point.

Pop-top only

A pop-top on the low-roof ProMaster gives you standing height when the top is raised and sleeping space up top, with the ProMaster's wide interior for the living space below. Many customers bring their own ProMaster for a pop-top installation, then decide on interior work from there.

Weekender
Build

Pop-top with a basic interior package: sleeping platform, storage, and seating. A good middle ground for people who want more than just the pop-top but don't need a full kitchen and electrical system.

Full Westy
Conversion

The classic layout: pop-top, rear bed, kitchen, storage, and electrical system. Designed around how you travel, not a fixed package. The ProMaster's flat, wide cargo floor makes layout design more straightforward than in some other vans.

Custom
Builds

Specific configurations designed around how you travel. The ProMaster's interior dimensions are forgiving enough that unusual requests (a wider bed, a particular storage arrangement, a workstation) are often easier to accommodate than on narrower platforms.

FAQs

  • The 1500 and 2500 share the same body. The difference is in payload capacity and suspension. The 2500 can carry more weight, which matters if you're planning a heavier build like a full Westy conversion. For a pop-top or Weekender build, the 1500 is sufficient and costs less.

  • Yes. We install pop-tops on the ProMaster low-roof model. When open, you get standing height and additional sleeping space up top. The ProMaster is too tall to fit in a standard garage even with the pop-top closed, but the pop-top still adds valuable living space. Some people start with just the pop-top and add interior work later. Others do the full build from the start.

  • The ProMaster is wider inside, has a lower and flatter load floor, and costs less to buy. The Transit offers AWD (the ProMaster doesn't), more roof height options, and a more car-like highway driving feel. Both are excellent conversion platforms. The ProMaster tends to appeal to people who prioritize interior space and budget.

The Transit tends to appeal to people who prioritize driving dynamics and configuration options. We build on both and can help you sort through the differences for your specific situation.
